Spiritual Growth- How To Attain It
In the modern world, it can be hard to attain a level of spiritual growth. With all the distractions of the internet, our phones, television, and magazines we may find that we are constantly attending to our physical wants and needs. We may spend very little time on our spiritual growth and what that means to us as human beings. As a result, we can find ourselves placing our self-worth and self-meaning upon material things and not on the greater meanings of our lives. Is it possible to balance our material and spiritual lives? What are some things we need to focus on if we truly want to experience spiritual growth in our lives?
Look Inward to Grow Spiritually
Introspection is important to your spiritual growth. Introspection is not the same as remembering events. You should instead reflect on your beliefs and your thoughts. You should reflect on your feelings and what your motivations are. If you examine these things you will find the meaning behind what you do on a day to day basis. When you take the time to examine your experiences, your decisions and the things you find meaningful it helps you to have clarity of purpose and clarity in your life. Think about the relationships you have with others and how you can make them better. Consider the traits within yourself you find as good, and how you can show those traits more in your life. By the same token, honestly assess your bad traits and think of ways to correct those traits so that you move away from them. You must have the courage to examine yourself and you must be willing to seek the truths within you. When you practice introspection always try to be objective. Forgive yourself when you find you have not lived up to your own expectations. We all make mistakes. Learn from your mistakes and make a commitment not to make the mistake again, then move on. Look at areas or behaviors you want to improve, then think about ways to make that happen. Introspection should not be about beating yourself up. It should be about loving yourself and wanting to be a better person.
Develop The Potential Within Yourself
Developing yourself means different things in different contexts. If you are religious then you view yourself as a spiritual being living on Earth in a body before dying and moving into the spiritual realm. In the world of psychology, spirit is just one of many diminsions to the individual.
In religion, mastering yourself is a theme that seems to be part of all of the major religious teachings. Spiritual development is a way to become closer to God. The spirit is the highest form and the physical needs of the body are seen as below the spiritual needs. Therfore, spiritual growth is seen as the most important aspect of life.
In psychology Maslow identified several human needs: physiological, security, belongingness, esteem, cognitive, aesthetic, self-actualization, and self-transcendence. James earlier categorized these needs into three: material, emotional, and spiritual. When you have satisfied the basic physiological and emotional needs, spiritual or existential needs come next. Achieving each need leads to the total development of the individual.
Search For Meaning
To achieve spiritual growth you must search for meaning. You must believe that every life has meaning. Searching for the meaning of your life in particular is a large part of your spritual growth. If you are religious then you may find that the meaning of your life is to serve a higher power. You may feel that God put you here for a purpose, and your purpose is preordained. On the other hand science teaches that we give meaning to our own lives by the choices we make and how we live our lives. Whatever your belief, it is important for you to determine the meaning of your own life. Without a purpose your life becomes like a ship adrift in the sea with no sails. The winds and currents of life are constantly tossing your ship to and fro. There is no direction, no purpose, and no destination. Although you have no idea of the purpose of your life when you are born, you reveal the purpose of your life to yourself as you grow and experience life. As you gain knowledge and wisdom the purpose will become clear if you take the time to search for it.
Recognize The Interconnectedness Of All Things
Whether you are religious or not, when you realize we are all connected to everthing else it can be a devine revelation. Religion teaches that we are all connected to God through a higher relationship with Him. Quantum physics teaches that energy in the Universe can never be created or destroyed. It simply changes states. Psychology teaches us that we reach a level of self transcendence when we realize the connection we have to all things. When you discover your connection to all other things it is a humbling experience. You become more respectful of other people, as well as animals, plants and the Universe as a whole. The wonders around you begin to become observable to you and you develop better relationships with your human brothers and sisters, as well as nature as a whole.
Spiritual growth is a process that happens day to day. Your journey toward spiritual growth is a constant journey that will lead you to become one with your spiritual nature. You just need to take the first step. Taking the first step opens you up to additional growth.
