Living In The Now- The Present Moment Is All There Is
If the present moment in time is all there is, how do we become better at living in the now? As the world embarks on a new year it is important that we think about our lives. What has happened this past year? What are our hopes for the new year? As we ponder these things it’s important to remember that the present moment is really all that exists. Our memories of the past are simply movies we play in our minds that show how we perceived certain events. By the same token, the future is nothing more than a fantasy we construct in our minds of events we hope will happen. But the present moment is the one we are living. The present moment constitutes all we perceive as reality. All the other things past and present are nothing more than constructs of the mind. This is the concept of living in the now.
Live The Present Moment Fully
When you are living in the now you simply make use of and enjoy the present moment; the NOW. Living in the now is the subject of much study and many books. One of my favorite authors, Eckhart Tolle has been writing about the concept of living in the now for years. The only thing in life we have is the present moment. As you sit reading this, the last sentence of this article is not here yet, and the words above are already read. As you proceed through this article it is much the same as we go through life. Each letter could be a moment in time. As we move forward the only thing we perceive is the last word we read. Now obviously this analogy is not perfect. You could easily go back and reread the last paragraph, but you can’t go back and relive a day from your past. But you still get my meaning.
The only moment in your life that you truly have is right NOW. What has happened before can never be re-lived. What will happen is an infinity of possibilities affected by your choices as well as the choices of others. You can’t be sure of anything you BELIEVE will happen in the future. That means if you spend all your time reliving past events in your mind or focusing on future events, you are not experiencing the joys of life today.
When you are doing something that you enjoy so much that you lose your sense of time, you are both living in the now and you are experiencing flow. These activities leave you so focused and full of joy that you forget all about time and you are truly present. This sense can be developed to the point that you find joy in more and more things as you learn to live in the now. These can be things that bring you immense joy, like creative activities such as music, painting, writing or other creative pursuits. it can be some outdoor sports or activity that brings you joy. it can a thousand different things. Whatever it is that gets you to the state of flow, you should identify it and cultivate it in your life. Use the flow of that activity to enrich your life. It is a sure way to start experiencing living in the now.
Practice Living In The Now At All Times
Living in the now has to be practiced just like any other skill. The more time you spend living in the now the easier it becomes until it is effortless. You begin to see the joys that you missed before as you worried about the past or the future. You start to regain the wonder at all the beauty that surrounds you that you had as a child. To practice, you just need to remind yourself throughout the day to return to the now when you find yourself going to the past or future. Become more aware of what you are doing right now, and be an active participant. Don’t simply go through the motions. Actually, use your senses to experience what you are doing. The more time you spend in the now the more you are actually living and experiencing life. If you miss out on a moment it is gone forever.
Remain Living In The Now
If you practice staying in the now you will notice you seem to have more time. You will begin to feel less stressed and have more joy. You will notice a change in your attitude and you’ll enjoy things that may have been a chore in the past. If you are dealing with a difficult situation in your life, stay in the now and notice your reactions and emotions. Observe how you feel and you will know yourself more fully. In this way, you can control how you react to situations in the future.
When you are living in the now instead of the past or the future your life becomes more meaningful. The more you practice it the easier it will become, until you no longer have to think about it. You simply remain in the now and experience all the joys and experiences that life has to offer.
