3 Excuses People Use For Not Reaching Goals
As we travel through life we have goals we wish to reach. Achieving our goals can lead us to a more satisfying life. Excuses are nothing more than self-sabotage that prevents us from reaching our goals.
If you have goals in life or dreams you want to reach, then you must stop making excuses. You have a destination in mind. You have a road to travel to reach that destination. Every time you create an excuse for why you aren’t there yet you allow yourself a way out. You aren’t holding yourself accountable. You must start to take responsibility for reaching your goal. If you don’t take that responsibility, your destination will just keep getting further in the distance.
If you want to be a high achiever then you really need to look at what you are doing to get to your goal. Setting a goal is only the first step on your journey. Next, you have to take action. You have to assess your action and find out if it is getting you closer to your goal. The one thing you can’t do is take the easy way out and start making excuses.
So how do you avoid falling into the trap of making excuses and giving yourself an easy way out? It is really this simple. You have to look at why you are making excuses in the first place.
You have to ask yourself some hard questions and be honest with your answers. Are you afraid of something? Are you perhaps afraid to fail? Worse yet, are you afraid of success? Be honest with yourself and identify the root cause of your fear. Then you can face your fear and move past it without making excuses.
Are you guilty of using any of the following excuses? If you are then you need to get rid of the excuses and face up to what is causing you to use them. Only then will you be able to get on track to reach your goals.
Here are some of the most common excuses that people make:
I’m Not Good Enough/Smart Enough
Many people have doubts at some point in life. They start to doubt whether they are good enough or smart enough to reach the goal they have for themselves. Then they use that as an excuse to justify failure. They can say “see, I told you I wasn’t good enough to do this job”.
As we have learned from using the Law of Attraction, your thoughts create your reality. So thinking you aren’t good enough or smart enough becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. What you think becomes what happens. If you continually put yourself down and think negative thoughts about yourself, then you will not ever succeed in reaching your goals. The first step to achieving goals is believing they are in fact achievable.
I’m not saying if you are 5’3″ you’ll be a star in the NBA. Your goal has to actually be achievable for you to reach it. But if you set realistic goals there is nothing stopping you from achieving those goals but yourself.
By the same token, you may say you aren’t smart enough for something. If that is the case then get started learning something about what you want to achieve and prove yourself wrong about your intelligence. You need to challenge yourself and continue to learn and work on your goals.
I’ll give you an example. Back in 1996 when I bought my first computer I had no clue how to make it do what I wanted it to do. So I started learning everything that I could about using a computer.
Before long I was replacing parts on them and helping others by working on them and making pretty good money on the side. Today I manage web sites and I can install and design them, making them do whatever I want them to do. I set up e-commerce stores and personal blogs for other people. I’m still making money doing this stuff.
The point is I didn’t assume I wasn’t good or smart enough. I knew it would take some effort to learn it. I put in the time and when I had a problem I didn’t run from it. I worked on it until I solved the problem. These days it is so much easier. I can just do an online search and find a solution.
So we can eliminate the first excuse, because I am here to tell you that you ARE good enough and smart enough. You just have to believe in yourself and put in a little effort and work.
Believing In Perfect Timing
There is no perfect time. Those who are always saying “it’s not the right time” will never accomplish anything. There is never going to be a “right” time. Life is full of challenges each day. If you
Your goals are not some elusive things that
I’m sure we are all aware of the saying that “the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step”. Take that first step today. Putting it off until tomorrow is just like being on the road in the photo above and putting the car in reverse. So if you imagine that you are on that road to success, will you put the car in drive and hit the gas, or are you going to go in reverse? It is totally up to you.
“I’m Too Busy”
This is probably one of the excuses that I literally despise. This is an excuse that has no defense whatsoever. When someone says they are too busy to reach their goals that simply says to me that they have other priorities.
It doesn’t matter what your goals are, they will require you to make them a priority. Then you will have to make time to work toward them. Whether you work a full-time job, have children, or a thousand other things vying for your time, it is you who decides whether to devote all your time to them.
Managing your time is important no matter where you are in life. If you come home from work, eat your meal, then sit down on the couch and watch 3 hours of television every night, is that the best use of your time? A successful person would probably say no. A person who isn’t getting anywhere you make the excuse that they deserve to relax after a long day at work.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t relax a little after a hard day. I am saying you can use the DVR and record the program to watch later. Then take a little of that time and work on your goal. If you simply cut out one hour a night from TV and worked on a goal that is 5 hours a week you have just freed up to work toward your goal. What could you accomplish by working on it for 260 hours over the next year? That is the amount of time you could be working toward your goals by just giving up 1 hour of TV a night. And that is only during the work week.
Excuses are like… Well, you know that old saying too. There are countless excuses you can make about why you haven’t gotten that promotion you want, or why it isn’t just the perfect time to start that business you’ve been talking about.
If you want to succeed you have to stop with the excuses and start putting in some effort to make your dreams a reality. Overcoming the habit of making excuses will lead you to live a life without limits. You can achieve your dreams. You are good enough and you are smart enough.
Get up and make it happen!
